Man swept into Lake Superior found dead near Marquette
Marquette police said they received a 911 call at about 2:53 p.m. on November 5 reporting that someone had been carried away by the water at Lake Superior, near Black Rocks at Presque Isle Park. Witnesses told officers he appeared to be pulled south from the cove.
Initial efforts to find him were hampered by difficult lake conditions. Search teams continued the next morning, with a Coast Guard helicopter crew joining the operation. The man’s body was found at about 8:20 a.m. on November 6, several miles to the east of Marquette, along a beach beside Lakewood Lane, in Harvey.
Authorities said the man was 62 and lived in Calumet. The search involved the Coast Guard, UP Health System-Marquette EMS, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Marquette Fire Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources Conservation, and police from Northern Michigan University. Police urged the public to stay away from areas near the lake during inclement weather, warning that conditions can become hazardous quickly.
