Bomb Threats Prompt Media Evacuations and Flight Diversion

Ireland’s RTÉ evacuated its Donnybrook campus after receiving a threatening email on the morning of November 6. The Irish Independent and Bauer Media also cleared their premises after similar threats. Emergency services, including Gardaí, went to the locations. RTÉ’s radio broadcast was interrupted, with music and a recorded message taking its place during the evacuation.

Threats also affected aircraft. A Ryanair flight from Rome to Lisbon landed at Lisbon’s Humberto Delgado Airport shortly before 8 a.m. after a warning of a possible explosive device. Authorities had not confirmed explosives were on board and were investigating. A Wizz Air flight from Prague to Rome was diverted to Venice, where it landed.

France’s prime minister’s office said four additional alerts concerned planes flying over French territory. The aircraft landed safely, and security services inspected them as an investigation began into the source of the alerts.

Irish Taoiseach Michael Martin called the events worrying and said they followed aviation threats the previous day that appeared coordinated. At least 25 flights across Europe were affected by bomb scares on November 5. EU officials said it was too early to determine whether the incidents were linked.
