New York Times in Exclusive Talks to Buy Letterboxd

November 5, 2026 — The Times Company is negotiating privately with Letterboxd on an exclusive basis, seeking to purchase it for about $330 million. The deal has not been finalized. The proposed price is more than 20 times Letterboxd’s projected 2026 earnings of about $15 million.

Letterboxd has roughly 30 million users who track the films they watch and rate them. Its founders, Matthew Buchanan and Karl von Randow, are likely to keep leading the company, with a Times Company executive as their reporting line. The service would likely continue operating as a standalone business for the foreseeable future, while integrating the company’s advertising technology.

A24 had also pursued the company but withdrew as the price increased. Other interested parties previously included Sony Pictures Entertainment, Netflix, Skydance, private-equity firm TPG, and Reddit co-creator Alexis Ohanian. The Times Company has also acquired The Athletic, Wirecutter and Wordle.

The Times Company did not comment on the negotiations. Letterboxd and its current parent company, Tiny Ltd., had not immediately responded to requests for comment.

Reported by Variety, The Verge.
