West Englewood Remembers Slain Violence Prevention Leader
On November 5, family members, friends and community leaders gathered outside Integrity & Fidelity in West Englewood to remember Andre Thomas, the organization’s founder and chief executive. They lit candles and released balloons in his honor. Thomas, 57, was shot and killed in Chicago Heights on October 31, Halloween night.
Chicago Heights police responded shortly before 9:30 p.m. to an area near West 14th Street following a gunshot detection alert. Officers found Thomas wounded and transported him for medical care, but he later died. The shooting remains under investigation, and police have made no arrests.
Thomas had spent decades working to prevent violence, including with organizations such as Ceasefire, before founding Integrity & Fidelity. The group works to reduce gun violence in Chicago and the south suburbs. Community leaders said Thomas helped defuse tensions and connect with people, often without recognition.
Ald. David Moore, who represents Chicago’s 17th Ward, said Thomas had stopped many shootings and urged those he trained to continue his work. Interim executive director Mark Saint said the organization would carry forward Thomas’ vision. Anti-violence activist Crystal Toran said Thomas had taught others how to continue the work.
Chicago Heights police are asking residents and local businesses to check security footage from 9:15 to 9:30 p.m. on October 31. Anyone with information can contact the department’s Detective Division at 708-756-6400.
