El Cerrito High Suspends Football Program Amid Hazing Probe

El Cerrito police began investigating after receiving a report on October 2 alleging that football players had bullied and hazed teammates. Investigators interviewed alleged victims, witnesses and school staff, and reviewed video evidence, police said. They concluded the alleged incidents took place between September 2024 and October 2026.

Police said 22 current or former El Cerrito High students are suspected of involvement. The alleged offenses encompass physical harm, sexual misconduct, attacks, unlawful confinement, pressuring a victim, stalking and conspiracy. Investigators expect to make multiple arrests as the case continues.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District suspended the football program on November 5, citing the investigation and the need to prevent further harm. The team’s head coach has been placed on leave, and an independent third party is conducting a separate Title IX investigation.

The district said it will offer support to students affected or involved and introduce anti-hazing education in classrooms. Police are seeking additional information from the public while continuing their investigation.

Reported by CBS San Francisco, KTVU FOX 2.
