Salon to End Publication After 31 Years

Salon announced on November 5, 2026, that it would cease publication after 31 years. The online magazine said its publishing model was no longer sustainable as the economics of independent digital journalism changed.

Founded in November 1995, Salon became known for journalism spanning politics, culture and criticism, with a liberal sensibility. It began as an online magazine and forum for perspectives and stories that might not fit easily in traditional newspapers and newsweeklies.

The publication expanded into breaking-news coverage and attracted writers including Jake Tapper and Glenn Greenwald. Founder David Talbot and former editor-in-chief Joan Walsh later became prominent progressive political voices.

In its farewell message, Salon thanked its staff, contributors and readers, calling the publication a community as well as a source of journalism and ideas. Some staff members said they had lost their jobs. The announcement did not specify what would happen to Salon’s online archive.
