LGBT Representation Set to Reach Record in Congress
The Congressional Equality Caucus said the 120th Congress will have the largest number of LGBT members in its history. At least 17 LGBT candidates were elected, with three members leaving and at least six joining, according to figures cited in the reports. Democrats also won control of the House and Senate.
New Hampshire Democrat Chris Pappas won an open Senate seat, making him the chamber’s first openly gay male senator. In Indiana, Democrat JD Ford defeated Republican incumbent Victoria Spartz in the 5th Congressional District, a seat that had not elected a Democrat since 1990.
Several LGBT lawmakers won re-election, including Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride, Kansas Rep. Sharice Davids and New York Rep. Ritchie Torres. Michigan state Sen. Jeremy Moss won a House seat, becoming the state’s first openly gay man in the chamber. Mark Pocan of Wisconsin, Eric Sorensen of Illinois and JoAnna Mendoza of Arizona were also named among the LGBT members.
The election also brought a record number of Muslim members to Congress, the reports said. Among those elected or re-elected were Abdul El-Sayed, poised to enter the Senate as its first Muslim member, and House members André Carson, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib.
The caucus celebrated the results in a social media post on November 5, saying the new Congress would be the “GAYEST Congress in history.” A separate prediction from Queer News Tonight said Democrats could change House restroom rules affecting McBride when they take control in January.
Voters Send Record LGBT Representation to Congress
The next Congress will include at least 17 LGBT members, a milestone celebrated by the Congressional Equality Caucus after Democrats won control of the House and Senate. Voters elected at least six new LGBT members, even as three current members leave.
Chris Pappas will become the first openly gay man in the Senate after winning New Hampshire’s open seat. Indiana Democrat JD Ford unseated Republican Victoria Spartz, winning a district that had not elected a Democrat since 1990. Michigan’s Jeremy Moss also won a House seat, becoming the state’s first openly gay man in Congress.
Re-elected members include Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride, Kansas Rep. Sharice Davids and New York Rep. Ritchie Torres. The results also include a record number of Muslim members, among them Abdul El-Sayed, set to become the first Muslim senator.
McBride’s re-election puts House rules governing her restroom access back in focus. Queer News Tonight said Democrats are expected to change the rule when they take control in January, after Republicans enacted a restriction that the program said targeted her. The new majority will have the opportunity to reverse that policy.
Democrats’ New Majority Celebrates LGBT Representation
Democrats are making LGBT representation a prominent feature of their new congressional majority. The Equality Caucus declared the 120th Congress would be the “GAYEST Congress in history” after at least 17 LGBT candidates won seats, including at least six newcomers.
Chris Pappas won New Hampshire’s open Senate seat, while Democrat JD Ford defeated Republican incumbent Victoria Spartz in Indiana’s 5th District. Michigan’s Jeremy Moss also won a House seat. Sarah McBride, Sharice Davids and Ritchie Torres were among the members re-elected.
The political stakes extend beyond representation: Queer News Tonight predicted Democrats would change House restroom rules affecting McBride after taking control in January. Republicans passed the rule two years ago, and the change would mark a reversal under the new majority.
The caucus’s celebration highlights a clear priority for Democrats as they take the gavel. Voters also elected a record number of Muslim members, including Abdul El-Sayed, poised to enter the Senate as its first Muslim member.
