Jeffries Wins Reelection as Democrats Move Toward House Control

Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries won another term representing New York’s 8th Congressional District on November 3, while his party was projected to take control of the House. Unofficial city Board of Elections results gave Jeffries 79.3% of the vote against Republican Lewis Mizrahi.

The projected Democratic majority puts Jeffries in line to succeed Republican Speaker Mike Johnson once the new Congress meets in January. Jeffries, 56, has led House Democrats since January 2023. If he wins the formal House vote required for the position, he would make history as the chamber’s first Black speaker.

Jeffries has described an agenda for Democrats’ first 100 days that includes restoring Medicaid funding cut by Republicans, renewing tax credits under the Affordable Care Act that have lapsed, opposing President Donald Trump’s tariffs and working to bring the U.S.-Iran war to a close. He has also set up five party working groups on costs including health care, housing, groceries, energy and caregiving, pairing progressive and moderate lawmakers.

Democrats also intend to examine alleged corruption involving Trump, his family and administration officials. Jeffries has said the House Judiciary and Oversight committees would lead that work. The party’s projected victory sets up the shift in House leadership, but Jeffries must secure enough votes from members when the chamber formally elects its speaker.
