Two Men Arrested After Psychedelic Gummies Given to Children
Police are investigating after children ages one to six were given bags of gummies while trick-or-treating in Ocean Beach, San Diego, on October 31. Parents grew concerned about the packaging and contacted authorities. One parent said his two-year-old picked up a packet before he noticed a five-gram dosage and a label identifying psilocybin mushrooms. A preserved sample tested positive for psilocybin, a hallucinogenic substance.
On November 4, officers searched a home on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard as part of an investigation into suspected narcotics activity and child endangerment. They found another bag of suspected psychedelic gummies matching those distributed on Halloween, along with a cannabis haul weighing over 2.5 pounds, more than 25 grams of methamphetamine, weighing equipment, wrapping supplies and documents thought connected to drug sales.
Police also took possession of a rifle held unlawfully, numerous bullets and a partly assembled pistol. Michael Goff, 80, and Shawn Michael Foster, 45, were arrested and booked into San Diego County Jail. Goff was booked on suspicion that, as a convicted felon, he possessed a gun; Foster was booked on suspicion that he, also a convicted felon, possessed a gun and ammunition.
By November 5, authorities had not filed charges against either man over the distribution of the gummies. Police have not identified who left the packets or who gave them to the children, and have not confirmed whether any child ate one or suffered ill effects. The investigation remains ongoing.
