Abreu and Contreras Reach Silver Slugger Finalist List
Boston’s Wilyer Abreu, an outfielder, and first baseman Willson Contreras are among the contenders for the American League Silver Slugger Award. The winners are scheduled to be announced on November 17, with selections made by each team’s manager and three coaches.
Contreras is a finalist alongside Pete Alonso, who joined Baltimore after Boston pursued him in free agency. The Red Sox then acquired Contreras from St. Louis to address first base.
Contreras batted .275, reached base at a .386 clip and slugged .516 in 130 games. He hit 27 home runs and drove in 81 runs. Alonso finished with a .267 average, .363 on-base percentage and .522 slugging percentage; his 43 home runs and 113 RBIs led the American League. He appeared in all of Baltimore’s games.
Abreu is among nine outfield finalists, a category that combines the position rather than separating players by spot. His competition includes Randy Arozarena, Cody Bellinger and Mike Trout.
Abreu’s .248 average, .327 on-base percentage and .446 slugging percentage were close to his marks in the prior two seasons. He played a career-high 157 games, setting personal bests with 24 homers and 76 RBIs. His 38 doubles topped the league.
