Documentary to Chronicle BioWare’s Final Years

Massive Effect: The BioWare Story will trace BioWare’s 31-year history, from its founding in 1995 by physicians Ray Muzyka, Greg Zeschuk and Augustine Yip through the studio’s closure. Filming began two years before Electronic Arts shut the studio on October 21 and continued through its final chapter. The closure followed underperforming game releases, and 400 jobs were cut.

The documentary will feature the founders, as well as Mass Effect and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic director Casey Hudson, voice actor Jennifer Hale, former EA chief executive John Riccitiello and longtime BioWare developers. The studio’s games, including Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur’s Gate and Knights of the Old Republic, have sold 100 million copies, the production says.

Super Channel commissioned the film, which is written and directed by Akash Sherman and co-produced by Fennessey Films and Score G Productions. The filmmakers are planning an extensive festival circuit and a debut screening next year. BioWare fans can submit photos, videos and other memories through a website for a chance to appear in the film. Co-founders Muzyka and Zeschuk said they were honored that the documentary would recognize the people who made the studio’s games and the fans who embraced them.
