Miami Gardens Student Arrested After Gun Tip at High School

School officials received an anonymous tip alleging that a student had a gun on campus. A school police officer questioned the 18-year-old, identified in an arrest report as Torrez Ramon Thomas. Thomas denied having a gun and said he did not have a backpack. A search of him did not turn up a firearm, authorities said.

School staff helped officers identify a classroom Thomas had attended. A backpack was found in a storage room there, and a wallet inside contained Thomas’ identification, the arrest report said. Surveillance footage showed him entering the classroom with the backpack, contrary to his statement to the officer.

Authorities took a semi-automatic pistol into custody as evidence. It was unclear whether it was found in the backpack or elsewhere on campus. Thomas was arrested for allegedly bringing a firearm onto school grounds and appeared in bond court. He was issued a $2,500 bond.
