WhatsApp Opens Event Invitations to Nonusers

WhatsApp is expanding its event tools so hosts can share invitations with friends and relatives who do not use the messaging service. Those guests will be able to view event information and respond without installing the app or creating an account. The changes are set to reach users over the coming weeks.

A new Events section in the app’s Settings will provide a place to create and send invitations, track responses and review earlier and upcoming plans. Hosts can add a header image, send tailored reminders and let invitees indicate that they are bringing another person.

The update includes limits on what invited nonusers can see: the event’s address will be available to them only after they RSVP. WhatsApp also says a host’s phone number will be hidden from guests they do not know.

The expanded access could make the feature useful for groups whose members do not all use WhatsApp, and puts its event-planning tools in competition with services such as Partiful. WhatsApp has already offered some event features, but this change lets hosts reach beyond its user base.
