Oregon Freshman Brandon Smith Embraces Barkley Comparisons
Brandon Smith made the most of an expanded role in Oregon’s 34-26 win over Northwestern, rushing for 82 yards on eight carries and scoring the go-ahead touchdown. The true freshman got his chance after running backs Dierre Hill Jr. and Jordon Davison suffered leg injuries during the game’s second half, helping Oregon keep its College Football Playoff hopes alive.

Speaking with reporters at Oregon’s Hatfield-Dowlin Center on November 5, Smith said he was pleased to be compared with Philadelphia Eagles star Saquon Barkley, a player he admires and uses as a model for his own game. Hill had made the comparison, and Smith said his mother had also told him he resembled Barkley on some runs.

Smith said Hill urged him to treat the opportunity as his moment and step in without a drop in performance. He credited Hill and Davison, whom he views as older-brother figures, along with fellow back Simeon Price and running backs coach Ra’Shaad Samples, for pushing him. Smith said that while he had limited playing time early in the season, he focused on learning the plays so he would be ready if called upon.

Smith said he transferred to Oregon after being released from his previous signing with Arizona and trusted that he could contribute despite other freshmen already having established themselves. He also said he avoids social media to limit distractions and keep a single strong performance from affecting his focus.

Oregon next faces No. 12 Ohio State. Smith said he believes the Ducks can run effectively, but stressed that success depends on the offense executing.
