Greg Newsome Turns Giants Prove-It Deal Into $46 Million Extension

Newsome signed a one-year contract worth $8 million, including incentives, with New York during the offseason. Seven games into the deal, the Giants agreed to extend him for three years and $46 million, with $32 million guaranteed. The 26-year-old said he believed the right team fit would lead to financial security, and that New York felt like the right place for him.

A former first-round pick by Cleveland, Newsome joined Jacksonville in a trade partway through the previous season. He said the switch was difficult because he moved from a primarily man-to-man, press defense to a system with more zone coverage. Jacksonville did not show interest in bringing him back.

In New York, Newsome has yielded the lowest completion rate of his career, 57%, and recorded a 62.0 coverage rating. He has given up no touchdowns, while making four pass breakups and one interception. He credited defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson’s scheme for letting him play aggressively and said his teammates also make his role easier.

Newsome said he could have played out his contract in hopes of earning more, but chose the extension because he values his connection with the coaches and teammates and feels financially secure. He also pointed to the support of Giants fans.

New York is preparing for its Week 9 game against the Philadelphia Eagles. The Giants are seeking their first playoff appearance since 2022, and Newsome will be expected to help the defense sustain its performance.
