Sanders Gets First Browns Start of 2026 Against Saints
The Browns are turning to second-year quarterback Shedeur Sanders for their Week 9 game against the Saints after Deshaun Watson entered concussion protocol. The start gives Sanders a chance to establish his place in Cleveland’s uncertain quarterback group before the November 10 trade deadline.
New Orleans’ defense could offer a favorable matchup. The Saints rank 28th in total defense, allowing 372.7 yards per game, and have given up 22 touchdowns. Their pass defense ranks 23rd, surrendering 233.3 yards per game. Nearly 47% of their defensive drives have ended with the opposing offense scoring, the second-highest rate in the league.
Coach Todd Monken praised Sanders’ preparation, saying he had been diligent and attentive in meetings. Sanders has shown flashes since taking over late last season, but has yet to establish himself as a long-term answer. Dillon Gabriel is also back from injured reserve, adding to the competition in the quarterback room.
Cleveland is coming off a loss to Pittsburgh, which claimed the AFC North lead after the teams split their first two meetings. Watson was sacked eight times in the latest game and has been sacked more than any quarterback this season. A change under center could give the Browns a lift as they look to rebound.
After New Orleans, Cleveland faces the 2-5 Texans at home, then the 4-4 Raiders following a bye. A strong performance against the Saints could help Sanders make his case to the Browns and their fans.
