Lakers’ Win Exposes Kings’ Rotation and Point Guard Concerns
The Kings could not build on their first win of the season, losing 116-103 to the Lakers on November 5. Luka Doncic led Los Angeles with 40 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. The Lakers made 34 of 38 free throws; Sacramento went 21-for-28 at the line.
Turnovers and the Lakers’ physical play proved difficult for Sacramento to handle. Coach Doug Christie used 10 players, including five reserves, while trying different combinations. Nique Clifford played just 3:18, and the team’s many short stints and changing groups made it hard to sustain momentum. The Kings are also expected to get Keegan Murray and Maxime Raynaud back, which could further complicate the rotation.
Darius Acuff Jr. played a game-high 42:28, finishing with 22 points and 12 assists, but shot 8-for-24 from the field and 3-for-11 from three-point range. Sacramento has few options to spell him at point guard: Malik Monk has been playing more at shooting guard, while Emanuel Sharp is used in a three-and-D role. No injured point guard is expected back, leaving Acuff at risk of carrying a heavy workload through his rookie season.
One group that provided a spark featured Acuff, Monk, Leaky Black, Precious Achiuwa and Dylan Cardwell. Their defense and transition play helped fuel a second-quarter run, including two chase-down blocks by Achiuwa. With Acuff able to move off the ball, Monk also created chances for him to cut toward the basket.
