Cruz Calls Texas Senate Loss a Rebuke of Republicans
Sen. Ted Cruz said Wednesday that Republicans had suffered a historic setback in the midterm elections, describing the result as a “Watergate-level repudiation.” Democrat James Talarico’s victory ended 38 years of Republican control of the Texas Senate seat held by John Cornyn, who lost the party’s primary to Ken Paxton.
Cruz said Republicans had failed to respond adequately to voters’ financial pressures. He cited rising costs, including those associated with tariffs, and said the war with Iran had lasted too long. He urged the party to focus on policies that improve the lives of working people.
Cruz said he had called Talarico to congratulate him and expressed willingness to work with the senator-elect. He also predicted Texas would return to Republican control, arguing the party should rebuild around blue-collar voters and free-market conservatism.
Talarico said his campaign reflected Texans across political lines seeking change. He has said he wants to reduce the role of large donors in politics, revise campaign-finance rules and curb the influence of wealthy figures such as Elon Musk, who supported Paxton.
Cornyn congratulated Talarico and offered to help with his transition. Paxton also congratulated him, saying he would pray that Talarico serves Texas and the country well. Democrats also won the Texas governor’s race: Gina Hinojosa became the state’s first Latina governor and its first Democratic governor in more than three decades.
Texas Voters Reject GOP as Cruz Concedes Economic Failure
Texas voters handed Republicans a historic defeat, ending their 38-year hold on the Senate seat won by Democrat James Talarico. The result was part of a broader Democratic sweep in the state, including Gina Hinojosa’s election as governor.
Sen. Ted Cruz called the midterm outcome a “Watergate-level repudiation” and conceded that Republicans had not done enough to address people’s financial struggles. He pointed to tariffs driving up costs and the prolonged Iran war, issues that undercut the party’s economic promises.
Talarico says he wants to reduce big-money influence in politics, overhaul campaign-finance rules and limit the sway of wealthy donors and figures such as Elon Musk, who backed Ken Paxton. His victory gives those demands a prominent platform in the Senate.
Cruz congratulated Talarico but also promised Texas would turn Republican again. His call to rebuild the party does not erase the voters’ verdict: Republicans lost ground as economic pressures mounted, and Democrats made the case for change across the state. Cornyn and Paxton also offered congratulations to the senator-elect.
Cruz Urges GOP to Rebuild After Texas Democratic Sweep
Texas Republicans have a clear task after a Democratic sweep: earn back voters’ trust by concentrating on their everyday concerns. Sen. Ted Cruz called the midterm result a “Watergate-level repudiation,” saying the party failed to respond adequately to economic pain.
Cruz cited high costs and the length of the Iran war, and called for policies that make a difference for working people. He argued that Republicans must rebuild as a blue-collar party rooted in free-market conservatism, rather than abandon their principles.
Democrat James Talarico’s victory ended 38 years of Republican control of the Senate seat. Talarico has said he wants to overhaul campaign-finance rules and curb the influence of wealthy people and large donors, including Elon Musk, who supported Ken Paxton. Cruz said he congratulated Talarico and would work with him when possible, while predicting Texas would return to Republican control.
Republicans also need to confront the party’s broader shortcomings. John Cornyn, who lost the GOP primary to Paxton, argued that the party had drifted toward performative politics and should make room for traditional conservatives and MAGA supporters. Cornyn and Paxton both congratulated Talarico.
