LAPD Helicopter Diverts to Avoid Navy Aircraft Over Los Angeles
The LAPD’s Air 3 helicopter was responding to an incident in Echo Park on November 3 when its crew was alerted to aircraft nearby. The police pilot spotted a military helicopter and moved the LAPD aircraft out of its path as a precaution. The military aircraft were thought to be under U.S. Navy control, and footage showed two helicopters flying above the 101 Freeway in Hollywood.
The LAPD pilot repeatedly broadcast his position over a shared aviation frequency but did not receive a reply. He then changed the helicopter’s flight path and returned to its previous position after the military aircraft passed.
In radio audio, the pilot said, “You guys got to pay attention, man.” He also complained that the aircraft had forced him away from a location where a suspect was hiding, and said he feared being struck.
LAPD Officer Eisenman said the crew altered its flight profile because the military helicopter did not respond. Pilots in the area are expected to share their locations on a common frequency so other aircraft can track nearby traffic.
The distance between the helicopters and the reason for the lack of response were not established in the accounts. The Navy was contacted for comment.
