Philip Rivers Meets With NC State About Head Coaching Job
Philip Rivers is meeting with North Carolina State officials in Fairhope, Alabama, on November 4 about the Wolfpack’s vacant head coaching job. The former NFL quarterback has emerged as a leading candidate since the school dismissed Dave Doeren after a loss to Stanford in October, and he has begun contacting potential staff members.
Rivers, who now leads the football program at St. Michael Catholic High School in Alabama, played for NC State from 2000 to 2003. He threw for 12,484 yards and 95 touchdowns in four seasons and earned multiple conference honors. His son, Gunner, a quarterback prospect rated four stars, has chosen to play for the Wolfpack.
Rivers has previously played down the speculation, saying NC State matters to him but that nothing was imminent. He also praised Doeren’s 14-year tenure and said he was focused on his current team’s postseason.
Another former Wolfpack quarterback, Russell Wilson, has entered the search. Wilson interviewed with NC State officials on November 3. He played three seasons at the school before transferring to Wisconsin, and recently joined CBS as an analyst following a season with the Giants.
Rivers remains the main focus of the search, and a deal is expected to take shape soon. The school has not announced a hire.
