Barzal Joins Islanders Practice in Step Toward Season Debut

Barzal took part in the Islanders’ Wednesday morning practice at the team’s facilities, wearing a red no-contact sweater. His participation marks a step toward his 2026-27 season debut, though the team has not set a return date.

He had been skating alone in recent weeks after inflammation in a previously injured knee forced him to stop shortly before the season began. The knee required surgery two years ago.

General manager Mathieu Darche said on October 22 that Barzal and the team were communicating daily about his readiness. Doctors were comfortable with him increasing his workload when he felt ready, Darche said, adding that Barzal’s view of how he felt would carry significant weight.

The Islanders have also seen forwards Calum Ritchie and Matias Maccelli sidelined by injuries expected to keep them out for multiple weeks. Barzal recorded 72 points, including 19 goals and 53 assists, in 81 games last season. His return would bolster a roster dealing with those absences.
