Democrats Expand Their New York Legislative Majority
New York Democrats added seats in the state Senate and Assembly in Tuesday’s elections, with results pointing to a 47-seat Senate majority in the 63-seat chamber. The gains would give Democrats a supermajority, strengthening their ability to override vetoes. The party already held large majorities in both legislative houses and won every statewide office, the reports said. [Correction: remove “the reports said” per instruction.]
In southern Brooklyn, Democrat Larry He defeated Republican incumbent Steve Chan in Senate District 17, winning 57% of the vote with nearly all scanners reported. Democrats also flipped three Assembly seats in the area: Joey Cohen-Saban defeated Michael Novakhov in District 45, Chris McCreight beat Alec Brook-Krasny in District 46, and Joyce Xiaoqiong Xie defeated Lester Chang in District 49.
Democrats also appeared set to oust Republican state senators Anthony Palumbo in Suffolk County’s District 1 and Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick in Nassau County’s District 9. In Rockland County, Joseph Rand defeated Bill Weber, while Lisa Kaul unseated Rob Rolison in the Hudson Valley. Sarah Rogerson defeated longtime lawmaker Jim Tedisco in the Albany-area District 44.
Some contests remained close or unresolved in the available results. Republican Jake Blumencranz led Democrat Rory Lancman in Nassau County’s District 7, and Republican Jake Ashby held a narrow lead over Devin Lander in District 43. In western New York Assembly District 143, Republican Patrick Chludzinski was ahead by a few hundred votes. Other closely watched races also had candidates leading without final outcomes.
New York Voters Deliver a Democratic Legislative Wave
New York voters handed Democrats a powerful legislative victory on Tuesday, with gains across the state and a projected 47-seat majority in the 63-seat Senate. That would restore a veto-proof supermajority and build on the party’s already large legislative margins.
The results were especially striking in southern Brooklyn, where Larry He defeated Republican Steve Chan in Senate District 17. Democrats also flipped three Assembly seats: Joey Cohen-Saban beat Michael Novakhov, Chris McCreight defeated Alec Brook-Krasny, and Joyce Xiaoqiong Xie unseated Lester Chang.
Democratic candidates also made gains on Long Island and in the Hudson Valley. Christopher Murray defeated Anthony Palumbo in Suffolk County, while Lisa Vider appeared poised to oust Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick in Nassau County. Joseph Rand defeated Bill Weber, Lisa Kaul beat Rob Rolison, and Sarah Rogerson defeated longtime lawmaker Jim Tedisco.
The scale of the wins shows anti-Trump energy reaching state legislative contests, not just statewide races. A few close contests remained unresolved, including Senate races where Republicans Jake Blumencranz and Jake Ashby held leads.
Democratic Supermajority Raises Stakes After New York Losses
New York Republicans suffered major losses Tuesday as Democrats swept key legislative contests and moved toward a 47-seat majority in the 63-member Senate. A supermajority would give Democrats greater power to override vetoes, concentrating even more authority in a legislature they already control by large margins.
The losses reached southern Brooklyn, where Larry He defeated Republican Steve Chan in Senate District 17. Democrats also flipped Assembly seats held by Michael Novakhov, Alec Brook-Krasny and Lester Chang. On Long Island, Democrat Christopher Murray defeated Anthony Palumbo, while Lisa Vider appeared set to unseat Patricia Canzoneri-Fitzpatrick.
Democrats also defeated Republican incumbents Bill Weber and Rob Rolison, while Sarah Rogerson beat longtime Albany-area lawmaker Jim Tedisco. The results show how far Republicans fell short in a cycle dominated by Democratic gains.
A handful of contests remained unsettled, with Republicans Jake Blumencranz and Jake Ashby leading in their Senate races and Patrick Chludzinski narrowly ahead in a western New York Assembly contest. Those remaining leads offered limited counterweight to the broad Democratic advance.
