Alan Wilson Wins South Carolina Governor’s Race
Wilson, the state’s attorney general since 2011, won 51.6% of the vote to Johnson’s 47.1%. The race was called for Wilson shortly after midnight Eastern time on November 4. He will take over from McMaster, a Republican who could not seek another term because of term limits.
Wilson campaigned on public safety and affordability, and also emphasized school choice, roads and tax cuts. Johnson, a Democratic state representative and former professional basketball player, challenged him in the general election after Wilson secured the Republican nomination in a competitive primary.
Wilson won that nomination after a June 23 runoff against Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, following a primary in which neither candidate received a majority. Evette had been endorsed by President Donald Trump, while Wilson later received Trump’s endorsement for the runoff and the general election. Wilson is the adopted son of longtime Republican Congressman Joe Wilson.
