Goodwin Claims Upset Victory Over Patrick in Texas
Goodwin’s victory would make her Texas’s first Democratic lieutenant governor in 27 years. She takes over an influential office that presides over the state Senate, although Republicans will retain a majority in the chamber and could limit her authority. Her four-year term is set to begin in January 2027.
The Austin state representative campaigned on public school funding, healthcare access and affordability. She also called for lifting curbs on hemp-derived THC products and imposing taxes on them to help fund health insurance for low-income Texans.
Patrick, a longtime confidant of President Donald Trump, has held the lieutenant governor’s office since 2015. During his tenure, he backed conservative policies including Texas’s near-total abortion ban and expanded cooperation between state law enforcement and federal immigration authorities.
Goodwin focused on Patrick’s record and his support for banning hemp-derived THC products. The Legislature passed that proposal in 2025, but the governor vetoed it. Patrick’s position drew criticism even from some conservative commentators who had previously supported him.
Goodwin entered state politics by winning a Texas House seat in 2018. Patrick, who first joined the state Senate in 2007, had won his 2022 reelection by 10 points. He has not conceded the lieutenant governor’s race.
Texas Voters Reject Patrick’s Conservative Power
Texas voters have dealt a major blow to Dan Patrick’s long conservative tenure, with Democrat Vikki Goodwin declaring victory in the lieutenant governor’s race on November 3. Her win would put a Democrat in the office for the first time in 27 years.
Goodwin campaigned on stronger public school funding, healthcare access and affordability, while criticizing Patrick’s record. She also opposed his effort to prohibit hemp-derived THC products, a measure passed by the Legislature in 2025 before the governor vetoed it. Goodwin has proposed taxing those products to help pay for health coverage for low-income Texans.
Patrick’s years in office helped advance Texas’s near-total abortion ban and closer cooperation between state police and federal immigration authorities. His political influence extended through his role presiding over the Senate and backing Republican candidates. The race shows the vulnerability of an incumbent whose record has been a driving force in the campaign.
Goodwin will take office in January 2027 for a four-year term. But Republicans will still control the Senate, whose rules shape the lieutenant governor’s powers. Patrick has not conceded.
Goodwin’s Win Faces a Republican Senate Check
Vikki Goodwin’s victory claim marks a stunning reversal in Texas, where Republican Dan Patrick has held the lieutenant governor’s office since 2015. Yet the Democrat’s win will not hand her control of the state Senate: Republicans are set to keep their majority, and the chamber’s rules determine much of the office’s authority.
Goodwin campaigned on school funding, healthcare access and affordability. She also wants to undo limits on hemp-derived THC products and tax them to help finance health insurance for low-income Texans. Patrick’s push to ban those products drew criticism from some on the right, but the governor vetoed the legislation after lawmakers passed it.
Patrick’s tenure advanced conservative priorities, including Texas’s near-total abortion ban and expanded cooperation between state law enforcement and federal immigration authorities. His ties to President Donald Trump and influence over Senate politics helped make him a formidable incumbent. Goodwin’s challenge therefore represents a sharp electoral break, but not an immediate change in the Senate’s Republican majority.
Goodwin is due to begin a four-year term in January 2027. Patrick has not conceded the race.
