Sherrod Brown Wins Ohio Senate Seat in Comeback

Brown, 73, will complete the Senate tenure Vance began after his 2022 election before leaving the Senate to become vice president. Republican Gov. Mike DeWine appointed Husted to fill the vacancy in January 2025. Brown served three terms in the Senate before losing to Republican Bernie Moreno in 2024.

The closely watched contest was a potential factor in control of the Senate. Republicans began the election with a 53-47 majority, and Democrats had to pick up four seats net to take control. Brown’s victory flips Ohio’s seat to Democrats.

Brown campaigned on affordability, manufacturing and labor, while criticizing Husted’s support for data-center development and raising concerns about energy costs. Husted argued the projects would bring jobs and investment, and pointed to legislation intended to keep data-center operating costs from falling on taxpayers.

The candidates also clashed over Husted’s relationship with Trump and his stance on the Iran war. Husted presented his record in state government, while Republicans portrayed Brown as a career politician and a dependable vote for national Democrats.

Ohio’s governor’s race was also a focus of the campaign’s final weeks. Democrat Amy Acton defeated Republican Vivek Ramaswamy, according to projections, after an attack ad featuring Acton’s estranged mother drew attention. Husted said he would not have run the ad. Brown is expected to serve until January 2029; the timing of his return to the Senate depends on Ohio’s election certification and his swearing-in.
