Magaziner Wins Reelection in Rhode Island’s 2nd District
Seth Magaziner won reelection to represent Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District on November 3, turning back a challenge from Republican Victor Mellor. Magaziner is a Democrat serving his first term in the House after winning the seat in 2022.
The campaign was marked by disputes over Mellor’s participation in the January 6, 2021, events at the U.S. Capitol. Mellor has said he attended the rally with his son and entered the Capitol, but denied doing anything illegal. He has also condemned attacks on police officers who defended the building.
Magaziner has promoted a proposal to prohibit lawmakers and their relatives from buying or selling stocks. He said he expects House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries to permit a swift vote on the measure if Democrats take control of the chamber.
Mellor devoted close to $3 million in personal funds to his campaign, bringing its reported war chest to $3.8 million. Magaziner raised $1.6 million for his campaign starting in 2025. Democrats have held the district since 1991.
Voters Keep Magaziner in Congress as Mellor’s Capitol Record Looms
Rhode Island voters returned Democrat Seth Magaziner to Congress on November 3, rejecting Republican Victor Mellor in the 2nd Congressional District. Mellor has acknowledged entering the U.S. Capitol during the January 6, 2021, attack, though he says he did nothing illegal and denounces violence against police.
The contrast was central to a campaign in which Magaziner appeared with two officers who defended the Capitol to condemn his opponent. Mellor has described himself as a proud participant in the events of January 6, while former Capitol Police officer Harry Dunn said the day was devastating for officers there.
Magaziner has also pushed a ban on stock trading by members of Congress and their families, saying a Democratic House leadership would allow a quick vote if Democrats regain control. Mellor spent nearly $3 million of his own money and built a reported $3.8 million campaign war chest; Magaziner raised $1.6 million beginning in 2025.
The result keeps the district in Democratic hands, as it has been since 1991. Voters chose an incumbent advocating limits on lawmakers’ financial dealings over a challenger whose Capitol actions became a defining campaign issue.
Magaziner Holds Rhode Island Seat After Costly Contest
Seth Magaziner won another term in Rhode Island’s 2nd Congressional District on November 3, defeating Republican Victor Mellor and preserving a seat Democrats have held since 1991. Mellor invested nearly $3 million of his own money in the campaign, building a reported $3.8 million war chest; Magaziner raised $1.6 million starting in 2025.
The contest also focused on Mellor’s presence at the January 6, 2021, rally and his entry into the Capitol. He has said he broke no laws and condemned attacks on police. Magaziner stood with two officers who defended the Capitol to denounce Mellor, making the events of that day a prominent point of conflict between the candidates.
Magaziner has highlighted a proposal to keep lawmakers and their relatives from trading stocks, and said Jeffries, the House’s Democratic leader, would permit an expedited vote if Democrats take control. That proposal remains a campaign priority, not a change enacted as part of this result.
The outcome leaves the district with its long-running Democratic representation. Mellor’s personal spending could not overcome the incumbent’s advantage, while Magaziner now returns to a House where the prospect of a vote on his stock-trading plan depends on control of the chamber.
