Menefee Wins Full Term in Texas’ 18th District
On November 3, Christian Menefee won a full term representing Texas’ 18th Congressional District, defeating Republican Ronald Whitfield in the midterm election. The Associated Press projected Menefee as the winner. Early results, with 11% of votes counted, showed him leading Whitfield 86.7% to 13.3%; those figures were unofficial and reflected only the votes counted at that point.
The district covers sections of Harris, Brazoria and Fort Bend counties. Its boundaries were redrawn by Texas Republicans in 2025 as part of a mid-decade redistricting effort.
Menefee first entered Congress after winning a January 2026 special election runoff. The contest followed the death of Sylvester Turner, who had taken over the seat after Sheila Jackson Lee died in 2024. Before Congress, Menefee served as Harris County attorney.
In May, Menefee defeated incumbent Al Green in the Democratic primary runoff. Green had represented the 9th District since 2005, but ran for the 18th after redistricting placed his primary residence there.
Menefee’s campaign priorities include health care access, affordability, public education, abortion rights, clean air and water, and gun-violence prevention. He also lists immigration reform, workers’ issues and criminal justice reform among his priorities.

The district covers sections of Harris, Brazoria and Fort Bend counties. Texas Republicans redrew its boundaries in 2025 in a mid-decade redistricting effort. Menefee first won the seat in a January special-election runoff after Sylvester Turner’s death; Turner had succeeded Sheila Jackson Lee, who died in 2024.
Menefee then beat Al Green in the May Democratic primary runoff. Green had represented the 9th District since 2005 but sought the 18th after his primary residence was placed within its new boundaries. The election gives Menefee a full term after that succession and primary fight.
