Luciano Faces Long Odds for Yankees’ 2027 Opening Day Roster

Published on November 3, the Yankees’ roster move gives Marco Luciano a place in the organization’s competition for second base, but it does not assure him a spot on the 2027 Opening Day roster. The 25-year-old was nearing minor-league free agency before the team added him to its 40-man roster on Monday, following a strong season in the Yankees’ system.

Luciano hit .327 with a 1.123 OPS and 10 home runs in 28 Double-A games, then batted .282 with a .872 OPS and 17 homers in 88 Triple-A games. Across 116 games, he finished with a .293 average, a .387 on-base percentage, a .545 slugging percentage and 27 home runs.

Several players are ahead of him in the second-base picture. Anthony Volpe has experience at the position but has not been consistent offensively in the majors. Jose Caballero brings defensive versatility and speed, though he posted a .655 OPS in 2026. Luis Garcia Jr. is another possibility, despite playing first base exclusively last season after struggling defensively at second.

Luciano also has to overcome his own major-league record. In 41 games with the Giants, he hit .217 with a .590 OPS and played both second base and shortstop. He has not appeared in the majors since 2024.

The Yankees could add another second baseman before spring training, further narrowing Luciano’s opportunity. Even a strong spring may not be enough to secure a roster place; he could open the season in Triple-A or with another organization.
