JetBlue Raises Checked-Bag Fees Again

The new fees took effect on November 3. The off-peak price for a first checked bag increased from $39 to $50, while the peak-period fee rose from $49 to $55. JetBlue had also raised baggage fees in March, citing higher operating costs.

The airline said the increase would help keep base fares competitive while allowing customers to pay for checked luggage only when they need it. Travelers who add a bag at least 24 hours before departure can save up to $15 on their first checked bag.

Some customers remain eligible for free checked bags. JetBlue Plus, Business and Premier cardholders can check one bag free for themselves and up to three companions. TrueBlue Mosaic members receive at least one free bag, while members at Mosaic levels 2, 3 and 4 receive two.

Jet fuel costs have climbed this year. The Airlines for America price tracker put fuel at $4.41 per gallon on Monday, compared with just over $2 in January. Other airlines, including United, Delta and Southwest, have also raised checked-bag fees in the past year.
