Cher’s Representative Says She Adores Michael Douglas
Cher’s representative responded to Michael Douglas’s recent comments about the 1988 Academy Awards by saying Cher still has affection for him. Douglas had questioned her best actress victory over his Fatal Attraction co-star Glenn Close nearly four decades ago.
During an October 30 appearance on The Graham Norton Show, Douglas said Close deserved the Oscar for her performance in Fatal Attraction. After host Graham Norton noted that Cher won, Douglas joked that the result matched what everyone had thought. Close, who was seated beside him, urged him to be kind, as other guests and the audience laughed.
Douglas later described Close’s work in the thriller as one of the greatest performances ever. Close has received eight competitive Oscar nominations without a win, and is due to receive an honorary award at the Governors Awards in November. She had earned three earlier nominations before Fatal Attraction brought her a best actress nod.
Cher won for Moonstruck, in which she played a Brooklyn widow who falls for her fiancé’s younger brother. The film received six Oscar nominations and also won for adapted screenplay and supporting actress, for Olympia Dukakis. Fatal Attraction was nominated for six awards, including best picture and best actress, but did not win a competitive Oscar.
Douglas received the leading actor award that year for Wall Street. Cher had previously received a supporting actress nomination for Silkwood.
