Packers Look to Exploit Carolina’s Struggling Run Defense

The Green Bay Packers and Carolina Panthers meet at Lambeau Field on October 29 after both suffered heavy setbacks Sunday. Green Bay fell 20-17 to Detroit, ending a three-game winning streak and leaving the Packers 4-3. Carolina, 3-3 and atop the NFC South, lost 43-13 to Tampa Bay. Kickoff is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET.

A key matchup comes on the ground. Green Bay ranks last in rushing offense, averaging 59.9 yards per game, while Carolina has allowed a league-high 153.2 rushing yards per game and 5.16 yards per carry. The Panthers have also given up 11 rushing touchdowns. Packers running back Josh Jacobs said the team needs to improve its execution and finish blocks.

Carolina’s pass defense has been more effective, allowing 195.7 yards per game, the NFL’s sixth-lowest figure. The Panthers’ offense will look to receiver Tetairoa McMillan, who leads the team with 511 receiving yards, and quarterback Bryce Young, who has thrown 12 touchdowns and four interceptions. Green Bay’s defense will aim to respond after struggling to pressure Detroit quarterback Jared Goff.

The Packers’ offensive line could be rearranged after Sean Rhyan’s ankle injury and Jacob Monk’s placement on injured reserve. Green Bay also had trouble converting scoring chances against Detroit, going 1-for-4 in the red zone and missing two field goals. Carolina’s Jaelen Phillips, who had a strong performance against Green Bay last season while with Philadelphia, could affect the pass rush if available.
