Inés Gómez Mont Detained in Miami Over Mexican Fraud Case
Gómez Mont, 43, is being held in Florida while U.S. immigration proceedings and Mexico’s extradition request move forward. Mexican authorities accuse her and her husband, attorney Víctor Manuel Álvarez Puga, of organized crime, money laundering and tax fraud. Both have denied wrongdoing, and the allegations have not been proven in court.
Prosecutors allege the couple used shell companies and false invoices to divert public money tied to government contracts. The contracts, awarded in 2016, were meant to provide security systems to seven prisons. Mexican authorities say the equipment was never delivered and that money was routed through a network of companies. The alleged amount is about 3 billion pesos, described as roughly $146 million in one account and $160 million in others.
A Mexican judge issued arrest warrants for the couple in 2021, after which they left the country with their family. Gómez Mont later said on social media that she had not received money from the contracts and was innocent. Álvarez Puga was detained by U.S. immigration authorities in Miami in 2025 and released on bond, according to the accounts of his case.
Gómez Mont is being held at the Broward Transitional Center. A federal judge rejected her emergency request to prevent a transfer out of South Florida, while directing the government to explain why her sealed habeas petition should not be granted. Mexican authorities have pursued her detention for extradition.
Gómez Mont became widely known to U.S. football audiences after proposing to Tom Brady in a wedding dress during media coverage of the 2008 Super Bowl. She was working as a television host in Mexico.
