Coast Guard Holds MSC Poesia at PortMiami for Inspection
Officials placed the MSC Poesia under detention at PortMiami on November 1, keeping the ship and its itinerary on hold while they examine it. Passengers were aboard, and the vessel remained docked as the examination continued on November 2.
Coast Guard teams are assessing the ship’s compliance with global maritime rules and U.S. law. The agency said the Captain of the Port’s main concern is protecting those aboard, the ship itself and the surrounding environment, as part of its role in overseeing safe and secure commerce.
MSC Cruises said the ship’s departure was delayed for the Coast Guard inspection and that the company was cooperating. The cruise line said it was keeping guests updated about the expected departure, but could not provide further details while the inspection was underway.
MSC Poesia can carry more than 3,200 passengers and over 1,000 crew members, according to the company. The number of people currently aboard was not specified. The Coast Guard had not said how long the ship would remain detained.
