Jaguars Add Austin Johnson After Hamilton Injury

The Jaguars brought back defensive tackle Austin Johnson, signing him to the practice squad on November 2 after Davon Hamilton was ruled out for the season. Johnson played 14 games for Jacksonville last season, recording 12 tackles, one sack, a forced fumble and a pass defensed.

The team faces Baltimore on Thursday, leaving little time to bring in an outside player and prepare him for game action. Johnson already knows Jacksonville’s defensive scheme, coaches and teammates, making him a candidate to contribute quickly. His addition does not necessarily mean he will replace Hamilton in the starting lineup.

Matt Dickerson appears more likely to take over at nose tackle for Thursday, with his role expected to grow from his recent backup work. Linebacker Foyesade Oluokun praised Dickerson’s effort and willingness to handle assignments that help the defense, saying the team has confidence in him. Rookie Albert Regis is another potential option.

Jacksonville may continue exploring ways to add defensive tackle help in the coming weeks. The Johnson signing is aimed chiefly at the immediate challenge against Baltimore, and the team is expected to make calls about reinforcements for later in the season. A trade is possible, but not assured.
