North Central College Student Killed in Bloomington Shooting

Giana Dettloff, a 19-year-old North Central College student from Naperville, was killed in a shooting at a party in Bloomington early Sunday, November 1. Seven other people were injured. Dettloff was also a member of the college’s cheerleading team and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shooting took place at a home on East Division Street’s 100 block shortly before 1:30 a.m. Bloomington police officers, who were responding to a call several blocks away, heard gunfire. Responders reached the scene in under a minute and began providing emergency care to the most seriously injured.

The injured included students attending Illinois Wesleyan, Illinois State and other colleges across Illinois, along with people unaffiliated with a college. Police said one woman who had been in critical condition was showing signs of improvement.

North Central College President Abiódún Gòkè-Paríolá identified Dettloff in a message to the campus community and expressed sympathy to her loved ones, friends, teammates and fellow students. The college encouraged community members to use campus counseling and support resources, and said memorial arrangements would be shared in keeping with the family’s wishes.

The investigation is being handled by the McLean County Coroner’s Office and Bloomington police. Police had announced no arrests. Illinois Wesleyan and Illinois State made counseling services available to students affected by the shooting; Bloomington police also invited community members to submit digital evidence or contact a detective with information.
