I Play Rocky Entered as a Golden Globes Comedy

On November 2, 2026, Amazon/MGM submitted I Play Rocky for Golden Globes consideration as a musical or comedy, rather than a drama. The film, directed by Peter Farrelly, tells the story of Sylvester Stallone and the making of the 1976 film Rocky.

The classification may surprise viewers: I Play Rocky has humorous moments, but has not been promoted as a comedy. The original Rocky competed in the drama categories at the Golden Globes.

If the organization approves the submission, I Play Rocky will face a different group of films in the musical or comedy contests for picture, actor and actress. Its lead performer, Ippolito, would be in the best actor race alongside names including Ryan Gosling for Project Hail Mary, John Malkovich for Wild Horse Nine and Seth Rogen for The Invite.

The drama field would include films such as Dune: Part Three, The Odyssey and Club Kid. Other recent Golden Globes submissions have also been placed in genre categories: Obsession and Artificial were submitted as musical or comedies, while Club Kid was submitted as a drama.
