Greenacres Jet Crash Kills Nine, Displaces Hundreds
The Learjet 60 went down near Military Trail and 10th Avenue North at about 12:50 p.m. on November 1. The aircraft was en route from Austin to the Bahamas. The crash caused a large explosion and left wreckage at the scene, near a mobile-home community and John I. Leonard High School.
About 600 residents were displaced while authorities secured the area and investigated. Roughly 35 people spent the night at a shelter. Some residents said they had only minutes to gather documents and clothing, and could not move their cars or go to work on Monday. Officials had not said when residents could return.
One of the victims identified was Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras, 20, a West Boca Raton High School graduate and aspiring pilot who was working as a commercial pilot. Her parents said she was the plane’s copilot. Tech entrepreneur Adam Robinson, his wife Helen Sharp, their two young children, two friends and a nanny were also among those killed, family members confirmed.
A resident, Joseph Santana, said the impact shook his home and that he rushed toward the crash site to see if anyone needed help. On Monday, a Day of the Dead Mass in Royal Palm Beach included prayers for the victims and their families.
The National Transportation Safety Board and Federal Aviation Administration are investigating. Air traffic control recordings captured the pilot reporting ice buildup and turbulence before describing a rapid descent and declaring an emergency.
