Bronx Students Walk Out After Javits Frimpong’s Killing
Published November 2, 2026.
Frimpong was shot near East 171st Street and Crotona Place while on his way to school. Students at DreamYard Preparatory School walked out on Monday, just blocks from the scene, to honor him and denounce bullying and gun violence. Friends said he had many connections at school and regularly spent time with classmates.
Friends described an incident involving bullying the previous week as a one-time occurrence. Frimpong’s father said the students involved were suspended. Classmates said the school’s principal had done what she could to address the matter, and that they felt safe on campus but worried about what could happen after leaving school. The city education department said it could not discuss the ongoing investigation and that counseling was available to students.
Police said three teenage boys approached Frimpong while disguising their appearances. He ran and dropped his backpack, which was later taken by another person, police said. The suspects allegedly picked up a shell casing and fled to a nearby subway station, where they jumped the turnstiles. Investigators are examining whether the killing stemmed from bullying, a mistaken belief that Frimpong was a gang rival, or robbery. Police have not made any arrests and are searching for the three suspects.
Frimpong’s family is raising money for funeral and burial expenses. Mayor Zohran Mamdani said over the weekend that President Donald Trump agreed to provide Frimpong’s mother with a visa promptly, allowing her to be present at her son’s funeral.
