Google Revives 1998 Search for Zelda Easter Egg

Searches for “Zelda” or “Ocarina of Time” now bring up an animated Master Sword on Google. Selecting it starts a brief transition featuring the Triforce, then changes the results page to resemble Google in 1998, the year the original Ocarina of Time arrived on Nintendo 64.

The throwback page uses old-style branding and presents blue links with short descriptions. One account of the feature counted seven links, including Nintendo’s Zelda site, a Wikipedia entry and Amazon listings for Zelda games. It is a selected set of results, rather than a fully functioning recreation of the search engine from that era. The animation is available on desktop and mobile.

The retro display appears only for searches connected to the game. Other queries still show Google’s current results page. Users who want a more conventional list of webpages can choose the Web tab in Search; browser settings can also make that view the default, with setup instructions available through TenBlueLinks.
