Gotham Wins First NWSL Shield as Seattle Secures Final Playoff Spot

Gotham finished the regular season atop the standings with an 18-5-7 record and 61 points, earning home advantage throughout the playoffs. Guro Reiten scored in the ninth minute, and Jaedyn Shaw added a second-half goal after returning from injury. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger logged a pair of saves en route to her 11th shutout of the season. “We are so happy to finally achieve this,” Shaw said of winning the Shield.

The club had needed only a draw to secure the title, but its victory completed a season-long push for more consistent results. Gotham has won two of the past three league championships after entering those playoffs as the eighth seed. The team now faces Seattle in the quarterfinals on November 8. Midfielder Jaelin Howell left the match with an apparent right ankle injury; the club had not provided an immediate update.

San Diego Wave finished second after beating Bay FC 1-0 and will host Utah on November 6. Washington Spirit took third with a 2-0 win over Chicago Stars, setting up a home quarterfinal against Portland on November 8. Kansas City Current secured fourth place by defeating Racing Louisville 2-0 and will host Angel City on November 7. The playoffs begin November 6, with the championship scheduled for November 21.

Seattle claimed the eighth and final postseason berth by beating Orlando 1-0. Jordyn Bugg scored from a corner in the 68th minute, while goalkeeper Claudia Dickey recorded a shutout without needing to make a save. North Carolina Courage won 1-0 but missed the playoffs. Courage forward Ashley Sanchez finished the season with 20 goals, matching the league record for a single regular season.
