Ciara Mageean, European 1,500-Metre Champion, Dies at 34

Mageean, who represented Ireland at two Olympic Games, learned she had stage-four bowel cancer in 2025. A statement shared by her family said she died on the morning of November 1, surrounded by loved ones. She was from Portaferry, County Down, in Northern Ireland.

Her defining achievement came in Rome in 2024, when she won the European 1,500-metre title in 4 minutes 4.66 seconds. She had earned silver in the event at the 2022 European Championships and finished fourth at the 2023 World Championships.

Mageean competed at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the Tokyo Games in 2021. Injuries interrupted her career, including an Achilles problem that forced her to withdraw from the Paris Olympics shortly before her scheduled heat.

Athletics Ireland said it was heartbroken, praising Mageean’s courage, kindness and spirit. World Athletics also paid tribute, describing her as an inspiration on and off the track. Australian runner Jessica Hull remembered Mageean as a close friend and celebrated the time they had shared.

Mageean married her longtime partner, Thomas Moran, in Belfast on October 12. The couple celebrated at Darver Castle, County Louth, alongside family and friends on October 25, a week before her death. Irish leaders also paid tribute to the athlete, whose European gold was Ireland’s second individual European title.
