South Carolina overwhelms Oklahoma as offensive questions mount

On October 31, South Carolina routed Oklahoma 42-25 at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, handing the Sooners another home loss and leaving their record at 4-4. Oklahoma trailed 28-10 at halftime, with its only first-half touchdown coming on a defensive interception return by linebacker Kip Lewis.

The Sooners managed 71 yards of offense before halftime and had 54 penalty yards. Quarterback John Mateer completed seven of 12 passes for 25 yards in the half. Oklahoma’s offense had scored only three points across its first eight possessions before two fourth-quarter touchdown passes from Mateer made the final margin closer.

South Carolina piled up 521 total yards, including 212 on the ground. Quarterback LaNorris Sellers ran for 96 yards and two touchdowns and threw for three scores. Oklahoma forced three turnovers, including two more interceptions, but could not turn that advantage into a win.

The defeat renewed scrutiny of offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and the unit’s direction. Venables faces decisions about the offense as the season continues, with Oklahoma’s performance adding to a longer stretch of inconsistent production. The Sooners’ next challenge is to find greater consistency before the season ends and the program turns to planning for 2027.
