Syracuse Stuns No. 19 SMU on Late Touchdown
Quarterback Steve Angeli threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to tight end Noah Meyers with 17 seconds remaining, completing Syracuse’s comeback for a 30-27 win over No. 19 SMU. It was Syracuse’s first victory over a ranked opponent since November 30, 2024, and evened the Orange’s record at 4-4.
Syracuse trailed 27-23 when it took possession at its own 32-yard line with 3:36 left. Angeli guided an 11-play possession, ending with Meyers’ first score as an Orange. SMU had a final chance to respond, but an incomplete pass, a sack and a fumble on the last play ended the threat.
The Orange had led 20-10 at halftime before SMU scored 16 straight points. Running back Kendrick Raphael put the Mustangs ahead 27-20 with a fourth-quarter touchdown and two-point conversion. Woody’s third successful kick in the contest cut the deficit to four with 5:26 remaining.
Angeli completed 21 of 34 passes for 200 yards and also scored on a 26-yard run. SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings threw for 351 yards and two touchdowns. The Mustangs gained 421 yards, below their season average of 470, while Syracuse converted three of its four fourth-down attempts.
Syracuse hosts Clemson on November 7. SMU is scheduled to host Virginia Tech on Friday.
