US Warns of Possible Mass-Casualty Attack at Moscow Museum

The US Embassy in Moscow issued a security alert on October 31 warning that a dangerous incident potentially causing widespread deaths might occur at the Tsaritsyno Museum Reserve, a palace and park complex in southern Moscow. It advised people to stay away from the area and crowds, remain alert and keep their phones charged. The embassy said the US government was coordinating with Russian authorities on a response.

Russia’s Federal Security Service said Washington had alerted it to plans for a Moscow terror strike and that appropriate measures were underway. Russian media reported that the grounds were temporarily closed or access restricted. The Baza Telegram channel said the park was opened only for people leaving, and that an organ concert was cut short and another performance canceled.

The embassy did not identify who might be behind the threat or provide details about a possible attack. The Tsaritsyno complex, founded as an estate for Catherine II in 1775, is a popular destination for visitors and local residents.

The warning recalled the US Embassy’s alert before the March 2024 attack at Crocus City Hall near Moscow. Gunmen killed more than 140 people at the concert venue. The US had warned of a possible attack on large gatherings in Moscow weeks earlier. Canada also issued a warning on October 31, advising against travel to Russia and telling Canadians there to consider leaving by commercial means.
