Chelsea defeat deepens pressure on Carrick after Martínez red card

Manchester United’s struggles continued with a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on October 31, leaving manager Michael Carrick under greater pressure. The loss extended United’s winless streak in all competitions to nine games, its longest since 1988, and left it with one league win from nine matches, a point above the relegation zone.

United created chances in the first half, including efforts from Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo, but neither side scored before the break. Chelsea took the lead five minutes into the second half when Morgan Rogers broke into the penalty area and lifted the ball past the goalkeeper.

The match turned further against United when Martínez received a second yellow card for striking Wesley Fofana with a raised arm at a corner. Cole Palmer scored from the resulting penalty in the 64th minute. Chelsea had further attempts ruled out for offside but held on for the two-goal win.

Carrick said United had conceded a significant goal while the match was still in the balance, and said he would focus on preparing the team for its next game. He is set to remain in charge for United’s Champions League match against Roma on November 3. The club’s travelling supporters voiced criticism of its owners and executives, while the defeat also renewed questions about the players’ performance and Carrick’s future.
