Alexander Brothers Face Civil Claims After 30-Year Sentences
On October 27, Alon, Oren and Tal Alexander received 30-year federal prison terms for a sex-trafficking scheme. The judge also ordered a decade of supervised release. Alon and Oren were fined $300,000 apiece, while Tal was fined $350,000. The brothers denied drugging, raping or trafficking women, while saying they regretted earlier views and remarks concerning women.
Their sentencing has not ended the legal proceedings. Attorney Michael J. Willemin, who represents three women pursuing separate civil claims, said evidence from the federal prosecution could support allegations in those cases. One plaintiff, Angelica Parker, alleges that Alon and Tal sexually assaulted her in 2012 while Oren watched. Those claims were not decided by the federal jury. An appeal concerning the viability of older sexual assault allegations is scheduled for argument before New York’s Court of Appeals in January.
The brothers remain at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn as prison officials decide where to transfer them. Judge Valerie Caproni recommended housing them separately, while their families’ communications strategist, Juda Engelmayer, said the family believes they would be safer together and hopes they can be placed in Florida, closer to relatives in Miami.
Engelmayer said family members visit regularly. He also described an incident in which an inmate allegedly rushed toward the brothers in a prison library before an officer stopped him; none of the brothers was hurt. Willemin said his clients hope to move their cases through discovery and, ultimately, trial.
