Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta Dies After Fall at Mumbai Home
Sanjay Gupta, the Indian filmmaker behind crime dramas including Kaante and Shootout at Wadala, died after falling at his home in Mumbai on October 30. He was reported to be either 57 or 59. Director Milap Zaveri, a friend and longtime colleague, confirmed Gupta’s death and said he had hit his head in the fall.
Mumbai police registered an accidental death report. Police said Gupta suffered a serious head injury after falling in the kitchen. His family members were asleep when the incident happened and learned of it the next morning; they did not raise suspicion or file a complaint, police said.
Gupta began directing with Aatish: Feel the Fire in 1994 and went on to make films including Kaante, Zinda, Kaabil and Mumbai Saga. He frequently worked with actor Sanjay Dutt and also produced films through his company, White Feather Films. Kaante, a 2002 heist thriller, earned Gupta a Filmfare nomination for best director and drew comparisons with Quentin Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino later praised the film.
Gupta’s more recent work included producing the 2024 film Visfot. He had also said he planned to write a sequel to Kaante. His wife, Anuradha Lekhi Gupta, and their two children, Shivaansh and Dalai, are among those he leaves behind.
