James lifts 76ers past Knicks in late-game finish
James delivered the decisive basket with 1:10 remaining, hitting a turnaround fadeaway after Jalen Brunson had put New York ahead 90-89 with a three-pointer. James later scored on a putback to extend Philadelphia’s lead to five with 11.9 seconds left and help secure the win.
Tyrese Maxey led the 76ers with 27 points. James added nine rebounds and eight assists, while V.J. Edgecombe made a late three-pointer that helped Philadelphia protect its advantage. Brunson scored 24 points for New York, and Karl-Anthony Towns had 22.
Philadelphia improved to 5-1 in the regular season and 1-0 in NBA Cup group play. The team has now beaten the defending champion Knicks twice this season, including a win in New York on opening night. Philadelphia played without Jaylen Brown, who was out with left knee soreness.
The 76ers held off New York’s second-half surges in a game that had a lively atmosphere at Philadelphia’s arena. James said he was working to become more comfortable with the team’s offense and that he had tried to stay aggressive in the closing moments.
New York hosts Brooklyn on Monday. Philadelphia’s next game is Saturday at Charlotte.
