Man Hospitalized After Being Struck by Train at Virginia Square
A man suffered critical injuries and was taken to a hospital after falling onto rail lines at the Virginia Square Metro station in Arlington and being hit by an arriving train on October 30. The train struck him at about 11:45 a.m., and he was trapped beneath a rail car, Arlington County Fire and EMS said. First responders freed him and paramedics took him to a hospital.
Metro Transit Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that the man stumbled and fell onto the tracks unintentionally. The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority said he was trespassing.
The emergency response halted trains between Ballston and Clarendon on the Orange and Silver lines. Metro set up shuttle buses between the stations while responders worked on the tracks. Regular Metrobus service on route A58 also runs between the stations.
The lines were later operating with single tracking, with delays in both directions, as the response affected a long section of the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor. Arlington County Fire and EMS warned of heavy emergency vehicle traffic and congestion near the station and urged drivers to use alternate routes.
