Brunson Named Philadelphia Sports Writers’ Top Pro Athlete

Brunson, a Villanova alumnus with ties to Philadelphia’s basketball community, was selected by the Philadelphia Sports Writers Association for its top professional athlete honor. The announcement came on October 30, the same day the Knicks were scheduled to face the 76ers in Philadelphia.

Association president Mike Shute praised Brunson’s play, leadership and local connection. The guard won Finals MVP after leading New York to its first NBA title since 1973, and also received Conference Finals MVP honors. The Knicks swept Philadelphia in the playoff series on their way to the championship.

Brunson will accept the award at the association’s 122nd annual banquet on January 11, 2027. The event is set for the Palestra at the University of Pennsylvania, rather than the hotel in Cherry Hill where it is usually held. Previous recipients have included athletes with Philadelphia teams or area roots, while Brunson’s recognition puts a Villanova favorite in the spotlight as a star of one of the 76ers’ principal rivals.
